The name
北京,意为「北方的京城」。英文长期写作 Peking——同一组汉字经由南方读音传入西方的结果;「北平」是它不做首都年代的名字;「大都」则是元代的称呼。今天的「北京」是官方名称,也提醒人们:地名承载的政治,不亚于地理。把北京、Peking 与北平放在一起看:一个是活着的都城之名,一个是外人笔下的旧称,一个则承认这座城也可以没有皇帝而存在。Beijing means “Northern Capital.” English long used Peking (a southern reading of the same characters); Beiping (“Northern Peace”) marked eras when it was not the capital; Dadu was the Yuan name. Today Beijing is the official form—and a reminder that place-names carry politics as much as geography. Hold Beijing, Peking, and Beiping together: one living capital-word, one older foreign spelling, and one title that admits the city can exist without the throne.
Why the world heard of it
世界认识北京,是把首都当作舞台:紫禁城与天坛、奥运五环、外交新闻,还有旧习惯里的「Peking」。它既是华北平原上的一座城,也是全球媒体中「中国」的速写——国家象征与市政日常,共用一个名字。The world meets Beijing as capital and stage: Forbidden City and Temple of Heaven, Olympic rings, diplomatic headlines, and the older Western habit of saying “Peking.” It is both a city on the North China Plain and a shorthand for the Chinese state in global media—metonym and municipality sharing one sound.
Then → now
辽、金、元、明、清,直到人民共和国,北京一直是北方的权力中心,在同一片平原上层层叠起宫殿、城墙与礼制。现代大道切开了帝国轴线,但从永定门到钟鼓楼的南北一线,仍能让人读出空间曾经如何安排权威。今天的北京拥挤、政治而文化:大学、残存的胡同与部委机关同处一城。它的连续性是中轴式的——即使名字一度意味着没有皇位的和平,都城的引力也从未真正离开这张地图。As a northern seat of power—Liao, Jin, Yuan, Ming, Qing, and the People’s Republic—Beijing stacked courts, walls, and rituals on the same plain. Modern boulevards cut through imperial axes, yet the north–south line from Yongdingmen toward the Bell and Drum Towers still teaches how space once ordered authority. Contemporary Beijing is dense, political, and cultural at once: universities, hutong remnants, and ministries inhabit the same gravity. Continuity is axial: the capital’s pull never fully left the map, even when the name briefly meant peace without a throne.
Three keys
名字的变迁 · The name shift
Peking 与 Beijing 之别不是冷知识:它记录着外人如何经由不同的方言与时代听见中国。两种写法都认得,是读懂这座城市的第一课。Peking vs Beijing is not trivia; it encodes how outsiders heard Chinese through different dialects and eras. Holding both forms is the first literacy of this place.
中轴线,不只是天际线 · Axis, not skyline alone
帝国规划把城市当作礼制的图解。读北京,先辨方向——中心、南门、北山——再走进任何一座单体建筑。可参阅概念「礼」。Imperial planning treated the city as a ritual diagram. Reading Beijing well starts with orientation—center, south gate, northern hills—before any single monument. Link Concepts → Li for the ritual grammar of order.
首都作为象征 · Capital as symbol
在海外,「北京」常常直接代表中国。把活生生的城市与国家象征分开来看,是文化阅读的一部分。Abroad, “Beijing” often stands for China itself. Separating the lived city from that metonym is part of cultural reading.
How to hold it in mind
北京是权力坐北的名字,也是历代中国在同一舞台上不断改写、却始终不肯放弃中轴线的城。Beijing is a name that means power sitting in the north—and a city where successive Chinas keep rewriting the same stage without abandoning the axis.
Season & pace
秋日晴好,最宜看院落与轴线;冬天干冷,更显大陆都城的本色。Clear autumn light suits reading courtyards and axes; winter’s dry cold sharpens the sense of a continental capital.
