The name

重庆——「双重的喜庆」——得名于宋代一位藩王的升格，地名本身就是一次封赏的记录。「渝」是至今仍印在车牌与口语里的简称；「江州」标记着更早的行政地层。英文跟随普通话。这座城真正的语法是垂直的：石梯、崖壁、雾，以及嘉陵江与长江的汇合。把重庆与渝放在一起看：一个是直辖市的名字，一个是本地人用一个音节记住山城水口的方式。Chongqing—“double celebration”—recalls a Song-era princely elevation when the place-name itself marked rank. Yu (渝) is the brief civic nickname still worn on plates and shorthand; Jiangzhou marks older river-prefecture layers. English follows Mandarin. The city’s true grammar is vertical: stairs, cliffs, fog, and the meeting of the Jialing and the Yangtze. Hold Chongqing and Yu together: one is the municipality-word; the other is how locals file a mountain-river hinge in a single syllable.

Later direct-controlled municipality status enlarged its map and ambition. Today’s highways, cable lines, and riverside towers continue an old argument with cliff and water: modernity here does not flatten the story; it climbs it. Continuity is topographic and civic: fog, stairs, and confluence remain the city’s civilizational signature, while Yu keeps the shorthand of belonging.

1937 至 1945 年，使「渝」成为炮火下耐力的同义词。这一层解释了为什么这个名字比天际线的短片更重。1937–1945 made Yu a synonym for endurance under fire. That layer remains why the name weighs more than a skyline reel.

两江汇合 · River confluence

嘉陵江与长江给了这座城一个枢纽。读重庆从汇流开始——可与山河「长江」对读。Jialing and Yangtze give the city its hinge. Reading Chongqing starts where waters join—pair with Mountains → Chang Jiang.
