The name

济南——「济」水之「南」——是华北平原山东一侧的河流定向之名，古典水文仍藏在字形里。「历下」是更早行政与市民层；「泉城」是外人很快学会的昵称，因为这座城在干燥平原文明里仍显得湿。英文 Jinan 跟随普通话。把济南、历下与泉城放在一起：地理语法、更旧的城层，以及齐鲁门户在泰山天气旁仍被记住的承压水理由。Jinan means “south of the Ji”—a river-orientation name on the North China Plain’s Shandong edge, where classical hydrology still hides inside the characters.
