The name

南京意为「南方的都城」，在观念上与北京成对。「金陵」「建康」是更古老的文学与王朝之名；Nanking 是旧英文写法。诗人往往仍爱说金陵，哪怕地图上写着南京——因为金陵装着烟水、画舫与王朝喟叹，那是行政称号独自扛不住的。把南京、金陵与 Nanking 放在一起：南都的主题、文学的香气，与外人笔下的旧称。Nanjing means “Southern Capital,” paired conceptually with Beijing. Jinling and Jiankang are older literary and dynastic names; Nanking is the older English form. Poets often prefer Jinling even when the map says Nanjing—because Jinling carries mist, riverboats, and dynastic regret that the administrative title alone cannot hold. Why the world heard of it

世界认识南京，经由南朝、明初定都、民国建都岁月，以及 1937 年的暴行——记忆拒绝只被风景收编。它也是梧桐、秦淮水与文人烟水之城：中国历史一再尝试，把权力安顿在黄河重心以南。海外旧籍里仍会浮现 Nanking；诗需要湿度与告别时，则浮现金陵。The world knows Nanjing through southern dynasties, the Ming founding, the Republic’s capital years, and the atrocity of 1937—memory that refuses to be only scenic. It is also a city of plane trees, Qinhuai water, and literati mist: a place where Chinese history repeatedly tried to seat power south of the Yellow River’s gravity. Abroad, “Nanking” still surfaces in older books; Jinling surfaces whenever verse needs humidity and farewell.

作为历代南方政权之都，又作为明初与民国的国都，南京一再成为「另一个中心」——当北方握着形式权力，或当国家自我再造时。城墙、纪念馆与大学把全国性篇章留在泥土里。今天的南京是省会，仍带着双重音域：行政的「南」，与金陵的文学天气。它的连续性是南方作为都城观念的主张，而不只是风景区——美与创伤共用一张地图，互不取消。As capital of successive southern regimes and later of early Ming and the Republic, Nanjing repeatedly became the “other center” when the north held formal power—or when the nation reinvented itself. Walls, memorials, and universities keep national chapters in the soil. Contemporary Nanjing is a provincial capital that still carries that double register: administrative south and Jinling’s literary weather. Continuity is the south’s claim to be a capital idea, not only a scenic region—beauty and trauma sharing one map without canceling each other.
