The name

山海关以山、海加「关」：燕山余脉与渤海之滨相遇的设防之门——把地形说成锁。英文称 Shanhaiguan 或 Shanhai Pass；「天下第一关」是市民书法与战略自夸，不是另一座城。关键辨名：关是历史关城街区，今属秦皇岛市管辖——勿把关记忆压进现代地级滨海城市。把山海关作门槛名，秦皇岛作更宽的当代行政框——这样读，东门才不会溶解成度假天气。Shanhaiguan joins shan (山, mountain) and hai (海, sea) with guan (关, pass): the fortified gate where the Yanshan ranges meet the Bohai shore—topography spoken as a lock.
