The name

苏州是植根于古吴文化圈的州名。诗人更爱「姑苏」——旧称里有雾与桥的味道；「平江」则让人想起宋人的水巷图。英文 Suzhou 跟随持久的行政形式；文言仍常倚靠姑苏，好让这座城听起来像思念，而不只是物流。Suzhou is a prefecture name (zhou) rooted in the ancient Wu cultural sphere. Poets prefer Gusu—an older toponym that tastes of mist and bridge; Pingjiang recalls a Song map of canal wards. English Suzhou tracks the lasting administrative form; literary Chinese still leans on Gusu when the city must sound like longing rather than logistics.
