The name

吐鲁番（西文旧拼亦作 Turfan）是英语读者常先遇见的绿洲名；中文「吐鲁番」跟随同一声形。活名之下坐着更旧的城国与军镇层：「高昌」「交河」，以及唐「西州」——葡萄园与多语文书的土坯都城。把 Turpan／Turfan 与高昌、交河放在一起：一个是今日地级绿洲；其余是走廊如何在火焰山下把墙、井与账册安放于沙漠边缘。Turpan (also Turfan in older Western spelling) is the oasis-name English readers usually meet first; Chinese Tulufan (吐鲁番) follows the same sound-shape.
