The name

武汉是三镇——武昌、汉口、汉阳——在长江与汉水交汇处缝合而成的现代复合名。旧图或称「江夏」为武昌层之名；英文 Wuhan 跟随民国合并后的行政一体。握住三镇是此城第一课：一个地级之名，三条岸线的记忆，以及天际线到来之前已像命运的合流——「九省通衢」是说成谚语的地理。Wuhan is a modern compound of three towns—Wuchang, Hankou, and Hanyang—stitched at the meeting of the Yangtze (Chang Jiang) and the Han River (Han Jiang). Older maps may speak of Jiangxia as a Wuchang-layer name; English Wuhan follows the republican-era merger that made the triad administratively one. Holding the triad is the city’s first literacy: one prefecture-level name, three shorelines of memory, and a confluence that already sounds like destiny before any skyline arrives—“nine provinces’ thoroughfare” as geography spoken as proverb.

The world hears a working metropolis; the classical ear still hears departure and crane above the Jiang–Han meeting.

Wuchang carried walls and exams; Hankou thickened as a treaty-port and commercial shore; Hanyang held industry and craft—plural archives of one hydraulic job. Modern Wuhan remains a Hubei capital of bridges, campuses, and river logistics—still answering the same geographic post. Continuity is hydraulic and mercantile: the name means a Chu metropolitan hinge that keeps China’s middle Yangtze readable as corridor, not as postcard.
