The name

武威是持久的郡县级名，字面已带「武功之威」。诗里更常响的是「凉州」：唐的行政称号，更是边曲、戍尘与西行情绪的代名词。「姑臧」是更早的绿洲城层。英文 Wuwei 跟随普通话；汉语要它「听起来像墙外的笛子」时，仍说凉州。把武威与凉州放在一起：一个是今日甘肃之城，一个是记忆如何安放一座河西的音乐都会。Wuwei—“martial awe” or military prestige—is the lasting prefecture-style name on the Hexi Corridor.
