The name

厦门常释为海上的「厦」与「门」——已像入口的港名。英文 Xiamen 跟随普通话；旧西文地图与贸易英语偏好 Amoy，来自闽南读音，把茶、印刷与契约运得比任何官方拼写更远。「思明」是持久城区与民国市民层。把厦门与 Amoy 放在一起：一个是今日城词，一个是鸦片战争与苦力时代账册如何记录一扇福建门。近旁泉州的刺桐／Zayton 是更早的中古巨港——勿把两名压成一张「福建口岸」明信片。Xiamen is commonly glossed as a “mansion” or “gate” on the sea—xia (厦) + men (门)—a harbor-name that already sounds like an entrance. English Xiamen follows Mandarin; older Western maps and trade English preferred Amoy, from the Minnan pronunciation that carried tea, print, and labor contracts farther than any official spelling. Siming (思明) marks a lasting district and republican-era civic layer. Hold Xiamen and Amoy together: one is today’s city-word; the other is how opium-war and coolie-era ledgers filed a Fujian door. Quanzhou’s Zayton is the older medieval emporium nearby—do not collapse the two names into one postcard of “Fujian ports.”

Why the world heard of it

世界听见 Amoy 作为条约港——教会印刷、茶与劳工路线，以及把宗亲资本与双语契约播向东南亚唐人街的闽南离散。泉州以 Zayton 教会中古季风声名；厦门教会十九、二十世纪福建海面的听法：教堂、苦力船，以及后来天际线之前的特区速度。此处刻意缺少强有力的古典诗歌或故事锚点——少而诚实的链接，胜过编造的死链接；加厚的是文章，不是假书架。The world heard Amoy as a treaty port—mission printing, tea and labor routes, and a Minnan diaspora that seeded Southeast Asian Chinatowns with kinship capital and bilingual contract. Where Quanzhou taught medieval monsoon fame as Zayton, Xiamen taught the nineteenth- and twentieth-century hearing of Fujian’s sea face: church, coolie ship, and later special-zone speed before skyline alone. This site deliberately attaches no classical poems to Xiamen: an honest absence is better than an invented one.

Gulangyu’s colonial villas are one visible stratum; the deeper continuity is mercantile and migratory—remittance and return as civic weather. Modern Xiamen is a special-economic and university city that still faces Taiwan Strait weather and diaspora capital. Continuity is honest division of labor with Quanzhou: medieval Citong / Zayton for the Song–Yuan ledger; Amoy / Xiamen for the modern treaty and reform door—same Minnan sea, different centuries of paperwork.
