The name

杭州起于钱塘江上的州名。宋室南渡后，城称临安——「临时的平安」，标题本身就承认了流亡。「行在」指皇帝驻跸之地；「钱塘」标记江与更早的市民地层。英文 Hangzhou 跟随持久的行政之名；诗人仍在湖雾里尝到临安。把杭州与临安放在一起：一个是今天的浙江省会，一个是记忆如何安放一座把怅惘炼成风景的流亡之都。Hangzhou began as a prefecture name (zhou) on the Qiantang. When the Song court fled south, the city was Lin’an—“temporary peace”—a title that admits exile inside the name itself.
