The name

汉中即汉水之中——汉与中。河名后来冠于王朝；盆地之名仍守水力地址。英文 Hanzhong 跟随普通话。旧称「汉中郡」，是刘邦与后世兵家必争的行政奖品。释义须谨慎：此非抽象「汉帝国」，而是秦岭之南、汉水上游天候与向蜀道路开始处的被命名盆地。Hanzhong means “midst of the Han” or the Han River’s central basin—han (汉) + zhong (中). The river-name later crowned a dynasty; the basin-name kept the hydraulic address. English Hanzhong follows Mandarin. Older speech says Hanzhong Commandery for the administrative prize Liu Bang and later strategists fought to hold. Hold the gloss carefully: this is not “Han China” as abstract empire—it is the named basin south of the Qinling where the Han River’s upper weather and Shu-facing roads begin.

Why the world heard of it

Han origin myth and Three Kingdoms campaign maps reuse the same choke geography; plank roads made difficulty into infrastructure. Modern Hanzhong is a Shaanxi prefecture of river plain and mountain edges—agriculture and ordinary cities under a civilizational name. Continuity is onomastic and orographic: the Han character on the map still points to a cradle basin and a hard road south.
