Seeking the Hermit and Not Finding Him
sōng xià wèn tóng zǐ
yán shī cǎi yào qù
zhǐ zài cǐ shān zhōng
yún shēn bù zhī chù
The hermit is on the mountain, but clouds hide the path.
Jia Dao’s Seeking the Recluse, Not Meeting: only in this mountain—clouds deep, place unknown. Not-meeting is the poem: the way often stops at “nearby.” Today: missing the sage, the cloud is already part of the answer.
When the mentor is offline, the answer may still be ‘on this mountain’—keep walking.
